(1) The following are the four main reasons for out-of-bounds and errors:
At beginner and intermediate levels, out of bounds and miss balls can be incredibly frustrating. What's even more frustrating is not knowing why this is happening.
a. grip strength; If we grip the racket handle too tightly, the ball will leave the racket face faster, a light grip is very important because we are using a hard ball and a hard racket, usually the grip is about 3/10, 10 being the tightest grip and 1 being the loosest grip.
b. Swing speed; The faster the ball is coming towards us, the slower we can swing the racket, we can be more aggressive from the baseline, but in the middle or front end area our swing needs to be slowed down and controlled, swinging too fast on the bottom ball can also lead to frequent pop-ups, we don't want the ball to go up too fast and too high when we are trying to lift the ball over the net.
c. Flick the wrist. This is a common mistake by novice players, who let the ball get too close to their body and flick their wrists in order to lift it over the net. It could also just be a bad habit - flicking your wrist at the end of your swing, which as beginners we often don't even realize is happening.
d. Run with the ball. When we run past the ball during a shot, without stopping first, our weight and momentum are transferred through the ball, and the resultant force exerted on the ball increases exponentially. When we stay still during a shot, the speed of the ball is generated entirely by the weight of our arms and the speed of our swing. When we run past the ball, our entire weight and momentum are exerted on the ball, This results in faster, more erratic speeds.
e. Consider the above four points as you strive to improve. You'll be surprised at how much more controlled, consistent, and repeatable you can be.
